Book Review: Yes Please by Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler is a well known comedienne from her time on SNL, work she has done with Tina Fey and staring in Parks & Rec.

My first time watching her on screen was as Rachel McAdam’s mom in Mean Girls. I think that goes for a lot of people my age or younger.

That crazy mother in her pink velour sweat suits, like many of Amy’s characters, is over the top and makes you laugh out loud. Before starting to read Yes Please, this was the type of situation that I anticipated to experience chapter by chapter. I am not sure that this was a fair expectation. Just because someone is wickedly funny does mean that their life is one joke after another.

Amy’s book reflects big moments in her life and some of the most important people to her. We learn about her mother, her friendship with Tina Fey, the birth of her first born and how she adapted to playing the same character everyday on Parks & Rec. Amy is more than just a Hillary Clinton look alike. She is a mother, a friend, a wife and so many other titles that are incredibly relatable. Yes she is famous but by reading this book I realized that that does not exclude her from the standard hurdles in life.

I am going to recommend his book but not for her reasons that I picked it up. If you would like to feel more relatable to the people you see on tv, this would be a great read. If you’d rather laugh out loud at her wacky humour, I suggest going and watching Mean Girls on Netflix again.
