Tina Fey, the wonderful woman who brought us Mean Girls, wrote a book that came out in 2011. It has been on my “To Read” list for quite some time and I am happy to say that I finally read it!

I very much enjoyed this book. It is an autobiographical, female empowering (non man hating), and easy to relate to. There was mostly SNL & 30 Rock content, and I would have liked to have read more about the various movies that she has produced but it was a good read none the less.

Unlike Amy Poehler’s book, Tina’s book does not revolve around the various relationships in her life. Don’t get me wrong, she talks about various relationships however it is about how they played a role in her success.

For myself, there was one message that resonated more with me than the rest:

  So my unsolicited advice to women in the workplace is this. When faced with sexism or ageism or lookism or even really aggressive Buddhism, ask yourself the following question: “Is this person in between me and what I want to do?” If the answer is no, ignore it and move on. Your energy is better used doing your work and outpacing people that way. Then, when you’re in charge, don’t hire the people who were jerky to you.

I know that I am not the only one out there who has struggled in the workplace with seeing eye to eye with colleagues. It may not even be on work related item but you feel out of place for not fitting in the mold. It is best not to let those things get in your career goals. Save the peer pressure hurdles for outside of work hours.

Getting back on topic, Tina Fey’s book is not only insightful but really funny. It is not something that most guys would enjoy, but ladies I definitely suggest that you give this one a read.
