The Desire Map

Last night I cracked open another book from my shelf. I knew that I would need to be in a particular mind-set to get this one started, and last night was the perfect time.

The Desire Map: A Guide to Creating Goals with Soul, written by Danielle Laporte is all about setting goals based on how you want to feel, not the things you want to own or the accreditation that you want on your resume.

For myself, perhaps you can relate, I have been asking myself the question of “now what?”. There were things that I wanted to do and see on my own in my twenties and managed to accomplish them all by the time I was 25 without any other big items to add to the list. One thing that caught me off guard when I would accomplish one of my goals is the feeling that I didn’t get. My degree, traveling, moving out of my parents house… they’re all things that I wanted, worked hard for but when I got there it felt anti-climatic. There was more of a sense of relief for not having regrets in the future for not doing it than there was of pride, accomplishment and joy. I get more emotional satisfaction out of going to my workouts on a regular basis than when I saw Santorini for myself. Honestly, what the fuck is that?! Maybe I have been going about things the wrong way. I often try to take the emotion out of my decisions but maybe I need to make more decisions because of them.

I haven’t gotten very far into this book but i am certainly intrigued. The author Danielle talks about how one New Years she started making a list of goals for different areas of her life but her list didn’t leave her feeling motivated. She then started writing how she wants to feel towards those different areas and felt a whole new outlook on life.

I wanted to share this new adventure with you just in case any of you out haven’t heard about this book but have a burning desire to feel that emotional satisfaction in life. This could be a tool to help you get there. If you want to know more without purchasing the book, check out their website for online resources, events, and testimonials of those who have already gone through the process.

As I myself go through this process I will certainly provide updates when there is something to share. If anyone reading this has already worked their way through this book, I want to hear how it worked out for you. Leave a comment or a link if you’ve already blogged about it so the rest of us can check it out.

Happy Friday everyone.

P.s. Also on the go this month is my personal challenge to drink more water. To check out the details on that bad boy, here is a link for you 🙂

  1. Hi! New reader here – and I actually work on Danielle LaPorte’s team.

I totally feel you on this! I’m 27 and have already ticked off all the things I wanted for myself when I was 15 years old. Gorgeous home, a job I love that challenges me every day, and loving partner that comes home to me every day. Once I got that…I thought, I MUST want more right!? Why do I get so much satisfaction out of getting a great grocery haul or brunching with friends than I do planning a big trip.

I’m super intrigued by this post and I’ll be coming back to hear how your process is going. Lots of love!
