Sunday night’s AMAs had a few memorable moments. Yes, the new Apple commercial with Drake is hilarious but the most important moment for us to take note of was Selena Gomez’s acceptance speech.
In 2014 this stage was actually the first time that I was authentically, 100 percent honest with all of you. I think it’s safe to say that all of you know my life whether I like it or not. I had to stop because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down. I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what’s in here [holds chest]. I’m not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore. All I can say from the bottom of my heart is I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to be able to share what I love every single day with people that I love. I have to say thank you so much to my fans because you guys are so damn loyal and I don’t know what I did to deserve you. If you are broken you do not have to stay broken. If that’s anything whether you respect me or not that’s one thing you should know about me. I care about people. Thank you so much for this. This is for you.
This was incredibly brave for anyone to say in front of any audience. For her to stand in front of her peers, her fans and cameras who are broadcasting her to millions of people is courageous and for some perhaps even heroic.
I have always been impartial to Selena but upon hearing her speech the other night, I am a fan of her. I am happy for her to acknowledge that being happy herself is just as important, if not more so, than trying to please everyone else. I cannot begin to imagine the amount of pressure on celebrities, especially the young ones who are trying to find their own identity while being scrutinized regardless of their intentions.
It is a life lesson for all of us that we need to take care of ourselves, find the things that make us truly happy and take the time and awareness to invest in. True happiness does not come from the validation of others, Instagram likes or retweets. Happiness comes from inside when you have provided your soul with all of its needs. Love yourself, take the time to figure out what you need as an individual to be happy and healthy. Don’t be afraid to put your hand up and ask for help if you need it. It is okay to put life on hold to sort things out regardless of the pressures you might be feeling from the world around you. Maybe you feel broken; but as Selena said, you do not have to stay broken.
This is a lesson that I myself have had to learn on more than one occasion. It’s okay to fail; it doesn’t make you a failure. Get back up; get a hand if you need one. There are so many people who love you and will gladly reach out that hand.
